I am pleased to report that my children are successfully transferring back to their original elementary school. I have yet to receive a written confirmation of this but I understand it will go through.

Our whole family is immensely relieved at this news, since it indicates something akin to a category 5 hurricane simply passing us by: no upheaval necessary; we can proceed as before, with no changes other than the usual that go with a new grade, new classroom, new teachers, shuffle of students, and the regular growing-up stuff.

Also, it means I can devote at least a portion of my attention to a few other projects, like the after-school children’s classes, my writing and photography work, and One magazine. If I were to home-school, I don’t think these things would get much attention, at least for the fall semester.

There has been so much change here in the city with many teachers leaving their posts (they have had no contract for maybe three years now) for greener pastures in surrounding towns. I am now curious to find out how many teachers will still be at my kids’ school when classes resume September 7. What a relief to be able to return, and not withdraw entirely from the system, or feel compelled to file a lawsuit in order to get the results we originally sought.

Something to say?
