Chalking this one up to learning something new every day, we’ve had a close encounter with toxic synovitis. Whether the diagnosis will stick remains to be seen, after a return from a visit to the hospital, where blood tests and a bone scan will be underway shortly. This is not for me, but for one of my children.
I’m a little spooked, because our family had a direct encounter with Lyme disease around this time last year, and Lyme can have arthritic-like echoes later in life. We think we nabbed it early enough, and effectively enough, with antibiotics (a 28-day course, longer than the minimum recommended dose)—but you can never be totally sure when it comes to bacteria and viruses. The fact that the limping, hip and leg pain manifested in the same leg, the very same spot, where an offending, infected tick bite showed up (and obviously, on the same person), is just a little bizarre for coincidence. But coincidence it may be. Randomness can be strange like that.
In any case, there goes our calm weekend day.
